Marita Liulia (born 1957) is one of the best-known Finnish artists internationally. The exhibition, Mysterium, presents a multifaceted professional, whose artistic oeuvre includes pieces breaking boundaries between the different genres of the arts, in addition to visual expression.
Alongside multimedia, photographs and videos the exhibition focuses on Liulia’s latest works, in which painting emphasises. The artist uses mainly pigments and acrylic in her paintings, but the materials may include for example lava and gold leaf. The physical nature of her painting can be seen from scraping of the canvas to letting the paint trickle, and from small intimate movements to large-scale reaches. In Vaasa the installation Tokyo Pavilion is displayed as a whole for the first time in Finland. The piece introduces another, new phase in Marita Liulia’s artistic expression.
Liulia was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal 2018. Her works have been exhibited in 50 countries.
